OPEN SOURCE MODEL
Some consider open source a philosophy, others consider it a pragmatic methodology. Open source, once you strip out all the emotion, is simply a way to develop software. Unlike other programming models, open source takes the viewpoint that developers create better programs if they can share their code. At its simplest level, this saves programmers from having to constantly write code that 'reinvents the wheel.' Its virtues are far more than that though. Eric S. Raymond summarized in his seminal work on open source, "The Cathedral and the Bazaar," why open source is such an efficient way to create programs.
First, by welcoming programmers who want to work on our project, we're guaranteeing developers start with a vested interest in the project's success. The natural follow-up to this is that we get users who also become invested in the project. Now, many of these users will never become programmers, but they will contribute ideas, wisdom, bug-reports, quality assurance testing, and a group with an interest in our project.
Nodilus is working in an open-source model because we believe that it is the most efficient and logical way to harness the creativity and wisdom of the collective. This website is designed to engage both hackers (programmers) and a diverse community of concerned and passionate participants, with the purpose of developing a social utility that can inspire and empower a regenerative culture in our everyday lives.
